Wow that escalated quickly! An idiosyncratic critique of a corny film made over 15 years ago swiftly morphed into a desultory polemic on…England? Politics? Colonialism? The class-system? It was like Edward Said employing Late Style…except he’s on speed…and very angry.
Jokes aside, funny article man. Interesting points. However England is in fact pretty diverse. Be careful when referring to ‘The English’; their values and proclivities and whatnot. Best to be more specific than resort to generalisations (even though it may not be as provocative).
Furthermore, I think that may be a bit of a stretch to say that, at the beginning of that weird scene with Knightly and Lincoln, she is told to be silent (as the object of desire). There’s plenty examples of less than savoury representations of sexism and stereotyping in the film, but that may just be a bit of tendentious interpretation of plot mechanics.
