Really great article, Ryan. I’m currently listening to Mike Duncan’s History of Rome podcast.on Spotify and find utterly enthralling. We really don’t realise how much we owe to the Romans.
There’s a funny story about Cato, and an indication of how powerful the Rooman empire was. There was a client kingdom of Rome’s (I can’t remember which) and apparently Cato was not a fan of the King who was hedonistic, and overindulgent. So Cato took a laxative and gave an audience to the king on the toilet!
It was also to get some historical context to Seneca. It’s a shame he was living during the time of Nero , and his involvement in the plot to overthrow him eventually led to his suicide.
