Movies I Saw at the Cinema That Blew My Little Brain Apart
Yeah, you’ve seen them, but they pack a punch at the pictures.
Seeing a movie at the cinema is radically different from watching one at home. It’s an immersive, communal experience that certain films are just made for.
During the pandemic, cinemas across the globe suffered. In response to his dispute with Warner Bros. over the latter’s intent to make Dune available to stream, Denis Villeneuve had this to say:
“Frankly, to watch Dune on television, the best way I can compare it is to drive a speedboat in your bathtub. For me, it’s ridiculous. It’s a movie that has been made as a tribute to the big-screen experience.”
He’s right. Certain movies lend themselves to a cinematic experience. Films directed by those like Villeneuve, along with Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Christopher Nolan, must be seen big, bold, and loud to truly appreciate them. Those kinds of movies shouldn’t first be viewed at home on your flatscreen while you intermittently check Instagram—it’s not what they were intended for.
I saw the films below before smartphones and streaming took over the world, and could appreciate them for what they were. Consequently, they each left a unique impression I still treasure to this day.
