Honestly, these producers don't have enough faith in the source material. While Tolkien didn't write about the second age in detail, he wrote enough for screenwriters to get a feel for the tone, mythology, etc. There's a reason Tolkien is so popular after all. By "playing it safe", they've ended up shooting themselves in the foot. Just give me an animated series of the Silmarillion narrated word by word.
